April is Heartworm Awareness Month—a perfect time to shine a spotlight on a serious but preventable disease affecting pets across the country. Whether you have a dog, cat, or even a ferret, heartworm disease is a silent threat that can have devastating consequences if left untreated!
What is Heartworm Disease?
Heartworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Once inside a pet's body, these worms grow and live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Left untreated, heartworms can cause severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to the other organs in the body.
Who is at Risk?
Dogs are natural hosts for heartworms, meaning the parasites can grow into adults, mate, and produce offspring. But cats and other animals can also be affected. Even indoor pets are at risk because mosquitoes can easily find their way inside homes.
Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states, though it's more common in areas with warm, humid climates where mosquitoes thrive.
Symptoms to Watch For
Heartworm symptoms can vary depending on the number of worms and the duration of the infection. In dogs, signs might include:
Prevention is Key
The good news? Heartworm disease is almost 100% preventable with regular medication prescribed by your veterinarian. Monthly preventatives—whether oral, topical, or injectable—are safe, effective, and much less costly than treatment for heartworm disease, which can be complex and risky.
